official

the cambridge exams are not official..the british council is not the british government..the exams are accredited.. like buying with a credit ard mastercard and not money..in europe the official language school is official..the trinity cambridge ielts are all accredited.recognized but please know they are not official ..I am an examiner of these tests and i work for a private business..not any govt..the american toefl toeic are as well private..from a university princeton in new jersey..no official exam either..redundancy runs rampant..trinity and cambridge both offer kids adults exams..and toefl comes in as well as the fastest growing exam of all nd heaper as its a pc based test..you do it in a room full of pcs with headphones and screens..multitasked..i work in murcia spain and always when people nned an official certificate they need official language school not cambridge or trinity..there is a kind of war today between the 3..cambridge trinity toefl in europe..all 3 want to be the top exam.confusion abounds us as parents nad adult candidates wonder...many say b2 when they mean first certificate cause b2 is a level and also an exam name in the official school..and then there is accent..the cambridge exam always includes british speakers while toefl inclused all..yanks brit south africa aussy irland..much better and corret..international english is what companies want..not someone who only undersntand my queen of english beg your pardon...so many are lost with germans speaking english chinese americans scotland...they say THEY SPEAK BADLY..haha..the candidate should understand all englishes and toefl is on the ball..toefl doesnt sell america. cambridge is such a proud brit always selling my country..now you know why europe has its official lang schools ..to stop the elitist sell..to say that speaking english is not the language of the gods..itsw everyones language..everywhere today thanks to the americans.like petroleum jelly ..everywhere and very sticky.we know who invented it but we dont ever buy the name brand.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.139.193.163 (talk) 15:51, 15 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Improving the article

Hello,

My name is Louise. I work for Cambridge English Language Assessment, so I want to be completely open that I have a conflict of interest.

But I also want to help improve the article - particularly when there is out-of-date or factually inaccurate information.

Please let me know what you think of my suggestions, and which changes you think need making. It would be great to do this collaboratively.

The editors have flagged that some of the content is written too much like an advertisement. I therefore suggest removing the following:

  • "Cambridge English Qualifications are designed to encourage continuous progression."
  • "There are three exams for young learners aged 6–12: Pre-A1 Starters, A1 Movers and A2 Flyers. These colourful, activity-based exams help young learners take their first steps towards learning English."
  • "There are three exams designed specifically for older school-age learners: A2 Key for Schools, B1 Preliminary for Schools, and B2 First for Schools. The topics and tasks in these exams are designed to appeal to the interests and experiences of school-aged learners."
  • "C1 Advanced has become a natural exit level for many school learners, due to ever-growing demands for English language proficiency, and it is accepted around the world for higher education study, work and migration purposes. C2 Proficiency is also available to learners who have mastered English to an exceptional level."
  • "These qualifications are designed to give learners the skills to succeed, whatever their goals – whether they aspire to get into university, start their own business or develop their career."
  • Cambridge English Qualifications: Business "test use of English in practical, everyday situations".
  • "This qualification is designed to help learners when applying for new jobs, getting a promotion or to further develop their career. I have removed the promotional language and made all the changes suggested above. I hope this addresses the maintenance template issues and will remove this too. I've re-added the templates, and you've asked for clarification at my talk page. Here are a few examples:

  • By the start of the 21st century, most of the Cambridge exam suite, which we recognise today, was established. This set the scene for massive growth in candidates.

More improvements

I've waited a couple of weeks, just in case anyone else wanted to add suggestions. As mentioned before, I'm more than happy to work on the article together if anyone else want to make edits.

So, here are the suggested changes to reduce promotional language:

  • Delete: Cambridge Assessment English has been providing English language qualifications and tests for over 100 years. Its exams are taken by over 5.5 million people each year, and are recognised by over 20,000 universities, employers and governments around the world. Although some of this is just straight, factual data - so where applicable I've added to the infobox.
  • Cambridge English Qualifications: Schools, General and Business: delete table column exam descriptions
  • Multilevel tests: delete table column 'test description'.
  • Alignment with the CEFR section, delete: "The CEFR is a series of descriptions of abilities which can be applied to any language. The descriptors are used to help define language proficiency levels and to interpret language qualifications. The CEFR has become accepted as a way of benchmarking language ability not only within Europe but worldwide."
  • Alignment with the CEFR section, delete: As it became increasingly important to verify claims of alignment to the CEFR, Cambridge English Language Assessment contributed to the authoring and piloting of the Council of Europe’s Manual for Relating Language Examinations to the CEFR.[34] The Manual’s linking process is based on three sets of procedures: specification, standardisation, and empirical validation. These alignment procedures are embedded within the test development and validation cycle of all Cambridge English exams.
  • Delete: Cambridge Assessment English is part of Cambridge Assessment, a department of the University of Cambridge, Cambridge Assessment English shares the university's mission to undertake "research at the highest international levels of excellence"
  • In fact, can reduce the whole research section down to the following: " The Cambridge English EFL Evaluation Unit was established in 1989 and was the first dedicated research unit of its kind. This unit is now called the Research and Validation Group and is the largest dedicated research team of any English language assessment body. Research is published in the Studies in Language Testing (SiLT) series.
  • Delete: By the start of the 21st century, most of the Cambridge exam suite, which we recognise today, was established. This set the scene for massive growth in candidates.

The Mighty Glen as Louise is being so open about her CoI - I wonder whether we need the "contributor may have a close connection" tag? I'm going to remove it, but please revert me if you think this wrong.
Thank you Pincrete, for all of your contributions here and at the article. I've restored the tag, which you clearly removed in the same good faith in which LouisePope has been editing. I think I posted somewhere that the whole topic area (TEFL exams), appeared to me (last time I looked), to be largely cut-and-paste of each board's promotional material - which I have the misfortune to have to read professionally! LouisePope, sources independent of CAE are, I believe, NOT required for factual, non-promotional, non-controversial content (structure of exams etc) - CAE is probably the best source for such material. Anything inherently promotional doesn't have much place in the article anyhow and needs to be both attributed (to the body that so described CAE) and independently sourced.
