Religion portals

I've noticed you've created quite a plethora of religion-based portals. In accordance with the conventions currently being discussed at WPT:P, I would like you to confirm that you intend to maintain all of these portals (I believe at least 6 are accredited to you at present), and that you intend to improve them in order to bring them up to the standard that is requested and required in order to maintain their presence in the namespace. While major religions are fairly high-volume and require suitable portals, several of the recent ones you have made are fairly irrelevant and definitely not high volume. While you have clearly put work into their creation, I feel obliged to let you know that several are liable to be removed from the namespace unless they demonstrate their necessity through extensive links either by articles or through the category system.

Finally, I must also point out that most of your portals are not listed at either WP:P or Portal:Browse, both of which are requirements stated at WP:P. Please feel free to contact me should you wish to discuss these matters further.

All the best, Deano 18:04, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Someone said that he will delete the religious portals I set up if I don't do this and that. Will you please update the religious portals to conform to whatever standards. Also, please help maintain the portals. Any advice, suggestions, etc are appreciated. Maybe I shouldn't have wasted my time with creating the portals. While creating the portals, I ensured that all information was accurate. These are the religious portals I established. -> Islam · Buddhism · Hinduism · Sikhism · Bahá'í Faith · Jainism · Shinto · Confucianism · Taoism · Zoroastrianism --JuanMuslim 1m 21:21, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Number of followers

In Buddhism, it says there are more than 700 million followers. Here, it says only 350. Which is right? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 85.130.132.35 (talk • contribs) 22:12, 13 January 2006 (UTC).

Looks like the problem has been reversed, 708m here, but 376m in Buddhism. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 130.15.126.81 (talkcontribs) 08:06, 14 April 2006 (UTC).

The problem has been fixed. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.238.93.202 (talk • contribs) 19:40, 20 May 2006 (UTC).

Now it says 1.4 billion, someone care to change this to what it was before? Sheepeh 23:54, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

New article

Dear people interested in Buddhism, following recent travels in Thailand and Laos, I have written Iconography of the Buddha, which I think fills a gap in our coverage. No doubt it can be improved, and it can also be linked to various other articles. Adam 10:16, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

Buddhist monkhood dress codes

For the sake of comprehensiveness, should there not be a section (it could very well be a country- or organisation-specific subcategory) that explains the particular dress codes of different Buddhist sects? From the simple saffron robes of Thai monks to the red cassocks of certain Chinese Buddhist monks to the elaborate and distinguishing robes of the Tibetan Buddhists... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 165.21.154.112 (talkcontribs) 07:49, 16 February 2006 (UTC).

Buddhism is NOT a religion...Buddhism is a major world religion.

I think the portal intro should be rewritten so it doesn't seemingly contradict itself. I know the complexities of the issue (language/cultures/arbitrary distinctions), but to a newcomer we need not to have such a dauntingly contradictory statement such as "Buddhism is NOT a religion" only to end with "Buddhism is a major world religion." Quantumbuddha 04:15, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

I agree, the first sentance is poorly worded. This is especially contradictory when there are many people that strongly believe Buddhism is not a philosophy, due to the fact that philosophies are based on reason and speculation, and Buddhist beliefs are based on direct observation per se. Perhaps it should mention how Buddhist beliefs and ways of life have come to form a major world religion. Sk33by 07:50, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

I have edited the intro to remove the word "NOT". Not only is this an incorrect assertion according to many followers of the religion (who must surely be considered some sort of authority on whether they are practicing a religion or not), but it is also an *emphatic* assertion that is not substantiated. I have left it at "religion or philosophy" to express that there is *some* ambiguity over Buddhism's status as a religion. Jamiego 13:44, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Looks good. The whole thing is rather reminiscent of Vacchagotta's questioning and Ven. Gotama's two silent non-answers. :D Is your teaching a religion? (Silence) Is your teaching a philosophy? (Silence) Any answer (firm or indifferent) just takes us down roads that contradict the teachings. Perhaps we should truly say "Buddhism: Is it a religion or a philosophy? Study it and find out for yourself." :D But I think that kind of answer goes against all that Wikipedia stands for, unfortunately! ;) Quantumbuddha 05:30, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Japanese buddhist monk picture

I took a picture of a (probably) begging Rinzai monk by Oigawa, Arashiyama, [{Kyoto]], if somebody working on buddhist pages feels like it could add something to any article, please feel free to use it.

Can someone look into this please? Something weird is going on with pagemoves there. - CrazyRussian talk/email 14:12, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara

I have wikified the article on Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, a Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka, but I don't know enough about Buddhism to ensure it is really accurate. Perhaps people here would like to cast an eye over it. Thanks. Itsmejudith 12:15, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Category:Dharmic Religion stubs proposed for deletion

Category:Dharmic Religion stubs has been nominated for deletion (see the discussion. The principal argument offered for deletion is that the category currently contains only 4 articles. A number of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism etc. stubs deal with topics that are common to all Dharmic religions. These stubs might be profitably moved to Category:Dharmic Religion stubs rather than those of a specific religion. If you have opinions on whether any particular stub article should be recategorized, or whether you would approve of a recategorization on your behalf, please discuss at Category talk:Dharmic religions#Category:Dharmic Religion stubs proposed for deletion. --BostonMA talk 01:06, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

  • This category was kept and renamed to Category:Dharmic religion stubs. ~ Amalas rawr =^_^= 16:38, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Iconography

Category:Iconography has amazingly only just been set up. Apart from the article by Adam mentioned above, now retitled Iconography of the Buddha (Thailand and Laos) and a couple of others, there is a shortage of articles on Buddhism to put in it - that I can find anyway. Many articles have sections on iconography, and it might be a start if these were just collected into a single article, with some summary text. All help welcomed - its not a subject I could write about myself. Johnbod 19:05, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Dates

The traditional dates of the Buddha vary between 11th/10th cent & 7th/6th. Dates according to modern scholars vary between 6th/5th & 5th/4th. See review of proceedings of a conference of scholars on precisely this question.

New featured Content

I personally feel some of the featured content should be refresshed. I will add any new suggestions on the votes for featured content, as soon as i gain approval from the Buddhsim Portal community. I have also added three new featured contents: Artwork, School/Vehicle and Buddha/Bodhisattva/Deity, and a box containing information on festivals and buddhism in the news to provide modern context to the Buddhist information. For asterixes see below the table. Below is a table detailing how each of the featured contents work:

Artwork School/Vehicle Buddha/Bodhisattva/Deity
Function The function of the featured artwork is to show off the best of Buddhist art, sculpture and architecture. Proposed artwork should be considered beautiful and profound and considered significant to one of the four vehicles of Buddhism This featured content has been supplied to show the variety of sectarian buddhism, illustrate its history and show a little of the culture and style of the major vehicles, schools and sects. This content is designed to show the sheer variety of Buddhist deities and spiritual beings and how they link in with Buddhist practice and thought
Eligibility This featured content is available for art (including: paintings, drawings, sculptures, reliefs), sculpture and statues and architecture (including: temples, viharas, shrines, pilgrimages sites). Any of the four vehicles: Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana or Navayana, or constituent schools such as: Rinzai, Shingon, Pure Land etc, or separate minor sects such as Chan/Zen. Any deity (including: dakinis, dharmapalas, lokapalas, devas), bodhisattva, buddha (past or future) or demon** (asura etc.) falls within the scope of this featured content.
  • Artwork should be put forward as an image without text or a short caption. It should not include nor require part of an article or a full article on the subject.
  • I did not include demons or asuras in the title of this text box as it would have occupied for too much space. Emishi (talk) 17:16, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Religious Practice

I am sorry I forgot this out of my above table. I would like to elaborate on the criteria:

Function

The function of this featured content is to display how lay and ordained Buddhists put their religion into practice in daily life, the methods for doing this and how this links into their cultures.

Eligibility

Any practice (not belief or text) that is applied by any of the four major vehicles (see table) can be used. These can be physical (prostration) , verbal (mantras) or mental (meditation). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Emishi (talkcontribs) 17:23, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

rotating selected sections

is it done automatically? I'm asuming they're like the "do you know?" trivias in (spanish wikipedia) Wikiproyecto:Budismo. If not, they can be added as tabs (as they're in the es.Wikiproject and es.Portal) in their own page.--Esteban.barahona (talk) 06:40, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Missing

Main topics section. I will work on adding that soon. Cirt (talk) 21:11, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

clone of this portal

fyi i found this portal (including edit button) here surrounded with ads and including a paypal donation button (though it seems unclear whom the donation will go to), but without the wikipedia logo and navigation bar on the left, using a php script called wikipedia reflection script. but since ianal, is this in accordance with the law and fully compliant with the GFDL requirements, it makes me wonder? oscar (talk) 01:35, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

Not sure, might get better feedback posting at WP:ANI about it. Cirt (talk) 02:00, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
done, thx. oscar (talk) 09:28, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Love

Hello. We are currently talking about the article Love, which had removed from the lede the Buddhist concept of love, and right now it says that love is related to attachment. You can go discuss there if you like. Greetings. --Dalton2 (talk) 07:25, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
