Talk:1740 papal conclave

Supposed veto

Was Spain's veto deployed against Corradini? The source for this is an unsourced comment in Miranda (http://www2.fiu.edu/~mirandas/conclave-xviii.htm#1740). Another self-published scholar (Adams, here) says this isn't correct, that there was jockeying to get Spain to use its veto against Corradini, but it was never used. (Note that Corradini was 82 and never a realistic candidate.) Adams' reading is based on an extremely thorough account of diplomatic/international intrigues at the 1740 conclave: Petruccelli della Gattina, Histoire diplomatique des conclaves (1866, A. Lacrois, Verboeckhoven & Co., Brussels) page 108ff. I've removed the veto from this entry. Looks like just another Miranda mistake and Petruccelli is authoritative. This veto is also not mentioned here, in what appears to be a rather learned article from 1877 full of good leads on other conclaves and legal background. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 21:46, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
