South College is a private for-profit college with its main campus in Knoxville, Tennessee. It offers more than 80 programs and concentrations, including certificate, associate, bachelor's, master's, educational specialist, and doctoral programs.

History

Knoxville Business College was founded in 1882. It was acquired by Stephen A. South in 1989, obtained accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges in 2000 and changed its name to South College in 2002.[1]

In 2003, students at South College became eligible to participate in the Tennessee HOPE Scholarship.[2] In 2007, the college began its first master's level program, the Master of Health Science in Physician Assistant program.[3]

South College's first doctoral program, the Doctor of Pharmacy, was introduced in 2012.[4] In 2015, the Doctor of Physical Therapy program was started as the first hybrid program in the U.S.[5] Also that year, students became eligible to participate in the Tennessee Promise scholarship program[6] and the associated South College Opportunity Grant was established.[7] In 2016, the merger for the South College Asheville campus was completed, and in 2017 the South College Nashville campus was established. Also in 2017, the South College Promise Grant and South College Military Grant were both introduced.[8] In 2018, the Online Operations Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the South College Atlanta campus were both established.[9] In 2019, South College earned a Top 10 School Military Friendly rating for the first time.[citation needed] Also in 2019, the Department of Dental Education was established at South College Nashville, alongside a full-service dental clinic and two dental programs.

In 2021, the South College Indianapolis and South College Orlando campuses were both founded. In 2022, the Doctor of Nursing Practice program was established with a concentration in Nurse Anesthesia.

In 2022, South College opened a new campus in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.[9]

Academics

South College currently offers more than 80 programs and concentrations in a variety of disciplines in the Schools of Business and Technology, Computer Science and Engineering, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant Studies, Legal Studies, Nursing, and Education. Health & Therapy and Ministry programs are offered as well. Education is career-focused and offered through several channels, including on campus, hybrid, and distance learning.[10][11]

South College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Various programs have earned programmatic accreditation or approval as well.[12]
