Identity V is a 2018 free-to-play asymmetrical multiplayer survival horror game developed and published by Chinese company NetEase in cooperation with Behaviour Interactive.[1][2][3] Players take the role of the Hunter or a Survivor in a one-versus-four game; the Hunter must hunt and eliminate Survivors typically through rocket chairs, while Survivors must evade the Hunter and collaborate to open the exit gates by decoding cipher machines.

It was initially released on April 2, 2018 by NetEase in China and later globally released on July 5, 2018 for iOS users and July 11, 2018 for Android clients. It is currently available on the App Store, Google Play Store, also on Windows systems.

Background settings

In 20th century Europe, a young artist couple acquired a vast estate in a secluded mountainous region at a bargain price. The property had garnered a disreputable notoriety due to unsettling rumors surrounding its previous owners. Nevertheless, the couple disregarded superstitions and hearsay. The player assumes the role of the child born to this couple. Twenty-four years ago, on the protagonist's twelfth birthday, the parents met a tragic end at the hands of criminals, inflicting severe emotional distress on the protagonist, eventually leading to the development of autism. Subsequently misled by others, the estate was sold and the protagonist was confined to a psychiatric institution. Despite changing ownership multiple times, the estate remained deserted, upholding its sinister renown.

Thirteen years later, a burgeoning crime fiction author known as Orpheus attained prominence in the literary realm. During the same period, the estate was acquired by a young investor who spared no expense in its restoration, yet significant areas of the property, such as the forest, hunting grounds, and church, remained idle. Just when prospects seemed auspicious for the estate's revitalization, inexplicable occurrences unfolded. Observers noted a frequent turnover of personnel, suggestive of perpetual vacancies that could not be filled, with numerous reports of missing individuals tracing back to the estate. Despite several law enforcement inquiries, substantive findings remained elusive. [4]

A decade ago, a significant fire consumed a substantial portion of the estate. Investigation revealed that the deceased individuals in the blaze had no discernible ties to the property, and only a small number of survivors were discovered unconscious in arrangements suggestive of a mysterious ceremonial practice, with the novelist Orpheus among them. Curiously, all survivors awoke afflicted with total amnesia concerning their presence at the estate and the events that unfolded there. Authorities categorized their ordeal as victims of a ritualistic sacrifice, while the cause of death for the other individuals remained enigmatic. As a consequence, the estate was shut down, and since that time, it has been shunned by all, earning the moniker "infamous estate" with no mention or approach by anyone. [4]

After spending a year in a coma, Orpheus regained consciousness devoid of any recollection of his identity. As a writer, his ability to craft compelling novels deteriorated, leading to a gradual decline in his once-celebrated prominence within the public sphere. [4]

Seven years ago, Orpheus established a private detective agency. A month ago, a wealthy businessman's young daughter disappeared under mysterious circumstances, leading suspicions to converge on the "infamous estate." Seeking assistance in unraveling the truth, the businessman sought out a capable individual. Two days ago, the protagonist, after receiving a formal request from the businessman, discovered a forgotten name etched on the letter's recipient line—[player inputs name].

One day ago, the protagonist responded to the commission letter, committing to undertake the investigation. The following day, the protagonist proceeded to the main house of the deserted estate to commence the inquiry. [4][5]

The player will portray the detective Orpheus, who, upon receiving a mysterious commission letter, enters the infamous estate to investigate a missing person case. During the process of gathering evidence, Orpheus, as played by the player, will employ deductive reasoning to review the case. While revisiting the case, the player can choose to portray the overseer or the survivor, engaging in intense confrontations. As the investigation progresses and approaches the truth, increasingly unbelievable revelations are uncovered.[6][7]

Survivor

In addition to the basic characters, the rest of the survivor characters need to be unlocked by exchanging clues or purchasing them (some limited skins obtained in the essence can also unlock the character directly). When entering the game, players can choose to play as they wish, and they can only change characters after a game round ends. Once the confrontation begins, 4 survivors and 1 hunter will spawn at random locations in the scene. Survivors must find cipher machines to decipher. There are a total of 7 cipher machines in the scene, and players need to decode 5 of them before they can activate the switch. At least 3 survivors must successfully escape in order to win.[8][9][10]

As her contract with the asylum was about to expire, Ada could no longer ignore her complex feelings for Emil, and she decided to help him escape.

All of this is exciting for Charles Holt, who has just come to this land. By day, he was a construction worker working at heights, like a burly, rude and solitary brown bear in the crowd. By night, in a humble hut that was almost halfway underground, Charles became the great engineer of the Sonora Aero Club-brilliant inspiration and ingenious structures were molded from his bloated, hard fingers. Charles understood that the design had a flaw that remained to be overcome: the tiny mechanism rose from Charles's hands and, after an unsteady shudder, fell straight and mercilessly to the ground.

For a manager of an architectural company, a few money is enough to purchase a risky but surely cost-saving design, and the conscience of an "outsider" who is strapped for cash. After an "accident", Charles was never able to meet his only soulmate, the small, thin Mr. Albert, who had truly believed in his dreams and connected emotions with him. Once again, the cowed Charles failed to refuse to sign the undertaking. The bad news came so quickly that the heart that warred with shame seemed insignificant.

The "broken parts" were quickly cleared away, and the new building was reported as a " Witness to Civilization". The only fault was Charles's trembling hands caused by nightmare - until the letter appeared and offered him a chance to redeem himself.

While her father was the unheralded and unloved second son of the family, he still had considerable wealth to support her rich childhood. Lily's parents and brother both loved sports, and her father dreamed of organizing legendary horse races, while her brother became a jockey with high expectations as soon as he became an adult. Being the only daughter in a sports family, Lily was loved by her parents and older brother, and developed a naive, arrogant and paranoid personality. However, all happiness ended abruptly when she was 16 years old. On the opening day of her father's expensive new horse racing series, a horse lost control and caused a serious accident. Her brother fell off a horse unfortunately and suffered severe trauma to his brain and body, regressing his intelligence to a toddler. Afterwards, he was placed in a care home by his parents. As a result of this accident, the race meeting, which should have established his father's prestige in the family, turned into a scandal that banished him from the family completely. The father, unwilling to face the fact, spent days with alcoholism, beating Lily and her mother, and then blaming himself and repenting when he was sober.The once happy family turned into a hell. The only respite for Lily at that period was visiting her brother and she always cheered him on, like she used to. Even though her brother no longer gave any response, at least he would show a happy face that didn't contain an ounce of impurity - which used to belong to the Lily . She met a peer child here, who offered Lily some "peer" advice after learning what she was going through. Shortly afterward, Lily's father finally breaks his neck while drunkenly returning home. And her mother never came back after going to the police morgue to identify the body. Lily wrote to her grandfather and uncle in the hope of seeking financial assistance to support herself into adulthood, as well as to pay for medical care in a care home. Her uncle ignored it, while her grandfather sent her enough cash to support them for two years, and a strange IOU that changed the creditor from her grandfather to her, and the debtor lived in a manor house called Oletus.

The family of three lives a slightly dull but happy life. His father is transformed into a performing artist, and the sociable mother becomes a socialite. Matthias, an introvert by nature, is a bit of a misfit in the family.

Character Skills

Talent system

Talents can be seen as passive traits of characters, capable of enhancing their abilities. Players can set personality talents in the character's personality context in deduction diaries or during game preparation. Talents are not fixed; players can set different talents based on the characters chosen. The roles of Survivors and Supervisors have distinct talent systems. Each role has four talent trees. Survivor talents are divided into Calm, Persistent, Friendly, and Brave talent trees; Hunter talents are divided into Strong, Alert, Intimidating, and Cunning talent trees. As the player's corresponding role level increases by 1, they can earn 1 talent point. For every 5 accumulated talent points, 1 talent point can be allocated. The end of each talent tree represents the ultimate talent, with a total of 120 personality levels available in the current version. Each talent page can allocate a maximum of 2 points to ultimate talents.

Gameplay

Basic gameplay

Quick Matches and Rank Matches are two basic game modes in which five players participate. These five players are divided into two roles: one player acts as the Hunter, while the other four act as Survivors with different roles in the match.

The objective of the Hunter is to eliminate all the survivors before they can escape. To achieve this, the Hunter must chase each Survivor individually and then eliminate them by placing them on a Rocket Chair. Meanwhile, the Survivors aim to escape through two exit gates by decoding five Cipher Machines and entering the password, or through the dungeon if there is only one Survivor left with at least two cipher machines decoded.

The Hunter wins the match by eliminating at least three Survivors, while the Survivors win if a minimum of three escape from the exit gate. The Survivors can rescue their teammates from the Rocket Chairs before the elimination process ends. Survivors can be placed on the Rocket Chair twice by the Hunter, and on their third attempt, they will be eliminated from the game. If two Survivors are eliminated, and two have escaped, the match will end in a tie.

Once eliminated, players have the option to spectate their teammates in-game.

Rewards vary based on the game mode and the players' performance.

There are various characters to choose from, each having their own abilities in-game. Hunters are given the ability to choose from "Secondary Skills", which are talents that may boost the Hunter during the match. There are seven Secondary Skills, each having a unique ability such as teleporting to certain landmarks or reversing cipher machines' decoding progress. Unlocking new characters requires Clues obtained through playing matches and finishing quests. Several characters from both factions may be available for free to use each day.[12]

The same gameplay follows in Single Training, a single-player game mode that allows players from both factions to learn game mechanics and character abilities.

Ranked matches

Identity V features two different ranking systems in the form of Character Points and Tier Divisions. Both are used only in Ranked Matches, available at specific time slots during the day.

Character Points are earned by playing ranked matches while using a specific character and are used to determine one's spot on the leaderboards. Character Points are specific to each character and may slowly decrease over time. Character Points will also be reset when a new Season arrives. Badges can be earned for a specific character depending on how many points are earned.

Identity V also features eight Tiers split into subdivisions, which players can be sent up and down depending on their performance. Winning Ranked matches earns Rank Points, and losing loses Rank Points. Once a certain number of Rank Points is reached, the player can go up to the next subdivision if they gain Rank Points in their next ranked match. The tier bracket the player ends up in will determine what reward they get once the season ends. Similar to Character Points, Tier Divisions are reset when a new Season arrives.

Alongside normal Rank Matches, players can participate in Five Players ranking matches, available at specific time slots during weekends. Five Players ranking mode uses a different set of Tiers and subdivisions but otherwise retains the same rules as normal Rank Matches.

Violent Struggle

Violent Struggle is a navigation submenu that features entertainment game modes, which have their own rules and adjustments.

In Duo Hunters, two Hunters team up against eight Survivors. Survivors gain an extra hit point; this game mode features telephone booths from which characters of both factions can directly purchase items with acquired game points to further strengthen their abilities.

The Blackjack mode plays in the style of the card game Blackjack, with a different player becoming a Hunter in each round.

In Tarot, a team of three Survivors (two Squires and a King) and one Hunter (playing as their team's Knight) face off against another team of the same composition, aiming to eliminate the opposing King before their rivals do. A special version, called Crystal Ball Tarot, gives certain characters temporary buffs by activating crystal balls.

A fourth mode added in 2021, known as Chasing Shadows, features six Survivors who have to race against each other on an obstacle course. Survivors can team up into three teams of two to participate in the game mode.

A fifth mode added in August 2022, called Frenzy Rhapsody, features six Survivors split into two teams and incorporates Dodgeball elements into gameplay.

A sixth mode has been announced in August 2023, called Hide and Seek. The actual gameplay resembles prop-hunting where two Hunters must find and eliminate six Survivors disguised as objects within 5 minutes.[13]

Persona

"Intrinsic Persona Web", also known as Persona, gives both factions the ability to have extra talents during matches. The current max points allowed to be used is 120, and points can be obtained by playing normal matches. Different personas take up a different amount of points and oftentimes allow players to explore their character's potential. Players are allowed to create a maximum of 17 different persona builds and can reset/delete personas as well.

Setting

Story Mode

The player initially assumes the role of Orpheus, an amnesiac detective who, in a case of a missing child, arrives at the Oletus Manor, the main setting of the game. The Oletus Manor is a large manor owned by a mysterious individual that holds "games" of the Hunter and the hunted. Throughout the duration of his stay, "Orpheus" collects evidence from written records, or "diaries", allowing him to visualize "games" from a participant's perspective.

On October 28, 2021, NetEase released a major expansion pack called "Time of Reunion" that further explores the storyline, particularly Orpheus's past and his involvement in the manor games.

On April 20, 2023, NetEase released Update 2.0 "Ashes of Memory", which changes the main character to Alice DeRoss, a journalist whose investigations lead her to the Oletus Manor.

Crossovers

The game has had many crossover events, typically with media franchises containing elements of the horror or murder mystery genres.

Identity V has collaborated with video game franchises Danganronpa[14][15][16][17][18] and Persona,[19] the film Edward Scissorhands,[20] and the manga/anime series The Promised Neverland,[21][22] Death Note, Junji Ito's Tomie, Mitsuji Kamata,[23] Bungo Stray Dogs, and Case Closed.[24]

From June to July 2022, Identity V featured a crossover event with the Chinese television series Link Click.[25] Identity V has also collaborated with the game Project Zero II, lasting from November to December 2023.[26][27]

There have been many crossovers exclusive to the game's Chinese servers, such as with Crazy Alien, McDonald's, and KFC.

Reception

Dave Aubrey of Pocket Gamer gave it a 3.5-star of 5 stars review, saying that the game is "well made, well-polished, and pretty darn fun."[28]
