Gail Ann Mahood[1] is a geologist and professor emerita at Stanford University, having retired in 2019 following a 40-year career there.[2][3] She is a fellow of both the Geological Society of America and the Society of Economic Geologists.[4]

Early life and education

Mahood was born in 1951 in Oakland, California.[5] She is married to fellow geologist Wes Hildreth. As of 2020, she was living in Felton, California.[6][7] She has received multiple degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, including a 1974 B.A., a 1976 M.A., and a 1980 Ph.D., all in geology.[8]

Career

While at Stanford, she served in multiple administrative roles, including associate vice provost of Graduate Education and chair of the Faculty Senate.[9][10] Her geologic work on lithium deposits in geologic caldera basins was covered by the Smithsonian magazine.[11]

Community involvement

Mahood is known for being active in local water authorities.[12][13][14][15] She has served as both an Engineering Committee member,[16] and as the president of the San Lorenzo Valley Water District.[17][18][19] She has also held multiple positions for the Santa Margarita Groundwater Agency, including chair,[20] vice chair,[21] board director,[22] and representative.[23] She is a member of the Friends of San Lorenzo Valley Water.[24]

Her expertise in this field is being able to link geologic changes and phenomena to the hydrology of watersheds.[25][26]

She has led webinars and community events to educate the local communities about the water resources of the San Lorenzo Valley area.[27][28]

Awards

Some of Mahood's work was awarded as being one of the "Top Geoscience Papers from 2016" by the Geological Society of America.[29]

Mahood has also served as an evaluator for the Crafoord Prize.[30] She has worked with the following journals and series:
