English: A PRIVATE INDEPENDENT LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGE FOUNDED IN 1782 AND KNOWN AS THE COLLEGE AT CHESTER. THE NAME WAS CHANGED TO HONOR GEORGE WASHINGTON. IT WAS THE FIRST COLLEGE CHARTERED AFTER AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE. MIDDLE HALL BUILT IN 1844 ON THE SITE OF THE ORIGINAL COLLEGE BUILDING DESTROYED BY FIRE IN 1827
