Shoulder Sleeve Insignia.
Description:
On a gray shield arched at top and bottom, 3 5/8 inches (9.21 cm) in height and 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in width overall, consisting of a gray center on which is a yellow olive wreath surmounted in the vertical center by a yellow torch enflamed.
Above the torch a white arched horizontal scroll inscribed “U.S ARMY” and below the center a white arched horizontal scroll inscribed “JROTC,” all in scarlet letters 5/16 inch (.79 cm) in height, the entire device within a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) scarlet border.
Symbolism:
Silver and scarlet are the colors associated with JROTC.
The torch, taken from the 1947 ROTC shoulder sleeve insignia design, perpetuates the history of the ROTC program in developing young students in body and mind.
The torch reflects enlightenment through knowledge and indicates the program’s academic instruction. It further symbolizes the passing of military history from one generation of soldiers to another.
The laurel wreath signifies achievement and leadership.
The combined symbols denote the goals of the JROTC program to instill knowledge to cadets and stimulate them to achieve their leadership potential.
Background: The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved in 1971.
