d faithful work. Many students of the University were greatlyindebted to Miss Ellen Smith, the registrar. Whenstudents became delinquent, they were called to theoffice of the registrar and reminded, kindly but in nouncertain terms, of their remissness. After picturingthe disgrace that would follow dismissal or suspensionfrom classes, Miss Smith would encourage and assistthe students. Many graduates have informed me thatthey never would have finished and received theirdegrees had not Miss Smith both awed and encouragedthem. If asked what office is especially desirable and honor-able for a young man to hold, I should answer, tobe a regent of a state university without pay forservices. No man serving as Regent did as much tobenefit the University of Nebraska as Charles H. Gere.In his capacity as editor of the State Journal, he alwaysdid everything possible for the best interests of theUniversity. Mr. Gere was a man of fine scholarlytraining. His friendship was always tobe depended upon, and in fact, he was one of Nebraskasbiggest and best citizens. At the time of my first election there were fourhundred students enrolled in University work; at theend of my twelve years service there were nearly threethousand.
