Summary
DescriptionSusan Lawrence Dana House (7167054249).jpg
The Susan Lawrence Dana House in Springfield, a national landmark (1904). Susan Lawrence Dana was an heiress who was widowed while she was still young. She decided to become the leading hostess in Springfield, and commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to build her a house worthy of entertaining. Because of its role as an entertainment building, it has some features that are unusual for a Wright building, including a front door that can be easily found. Charles C. Thomas, an admirer of Wright's, bought the house in 1944 as Dana was in failing health. He maintained most of the house's furnishings, even as he used the building as a printing house. He sold the home the state of Illinois in 1981 for $1 million.
