elHptical wdndows beneath the cornice of the flat roofing.Over the shrine a great umbrella was placed; on a shrine foundwithin the tope of Manikyala four were affixed, one above another.Around the building runs a gallery, and from it a passageway leadsto the socle. The same is surrounded by a parapet of stone, whichw^as made to imitate w^ooden banisters; similarly the four stonegates in this banister imitate a superstructure of wood translatedinto stone. Two pillars have ele|)hants as cajiitals ; and there areposts again which are bound together by three stone cross-beams,like the entrances to the temples in China, and before the numerousShinto temples in Japan. The entire portal of Sanchi was adornedwith sculptures by King Ananda, in the first century of our era.These represent the Buddhist ritual, the adoration of relics, the 316 INDIA IN ANTIQUITV ])rayer to the Bodhi or fig-tree, under which Buddha received eidight-enment, the adoration of the Dlianimachaka, or wheel of the law,
