DescriptionPortrait of Col Abel C Pepper the Governments Indian Agent Stationed at Logansport September 1838-cropped.jpg
English: Col. Abel C. Pepper negotiated treaties for land with the Potawatomi. Each treaty required the Indians to leave within two years. In 1839 those who had not complied were gathered at Crooked Creek, west of Logansport, to begin their forced evacuation to a reservation in the west. This event became known as the Trail of Death.
