Shah-i-Zinda est la nécropole du "Roi vivant", en raison de l'existence d'une légende liée à la mort de Qassim-ibn-Abbas, protecteur de Samarcande et Saint islamique.

Shah-i-Zinda est accessible par un escalier datant du XVIIIème siècle qui a remplacé un chemin, l'ensemble est composé de mosquées et de mausolées construits sur la colline d'Afrosyab (le lieu de l'antique Samarcande).

Le mausolée du cousin du Prophête : Qassim-ibn-Abbas, a été construit le premier à cet endroit au XIème siècle, puis réaménagé au XIVème siècle, car c'était devenu le principal lieu saint de la ville. Ce missionnaire musulman était arrivé en Sogdiane en 676 au moment de la conquête arabe.

De nombreuses tombes ont été construites à proximité de celle du Saint dans les siècles qui ont suivi, donnant naissance à cet ensemble majeur du patrimoine islamique de Samarcande.
