Description
Español: Retrato anónimo del célebre dramaturgo español Félix Lope de Vega y Carpio (1562-1635). Este lienzo procede de las colecciones del pintor Valentín Carderera, de quién pasó al general Romualdo Nogués, aunque entre ambos o antes de que perteneciera a Carderera era del poeta Manuel José Quintana, y fue adquirido por José Lázaro Galdiano antes del año 1902. Félix Lope de Vega aparece en traje talar y ostentando la cruz de caballero de la Orden de Malta. La atribución de este lienzo a la escuela del pintor Eugenio Cajes o al propio Cajes es debida a Valentín Carderera. Además, el rostro del dramaturgo es muy parecido al del retrato que se conserva en el Instituto Valencia de Don Juan, y en el que Lope de Vega aparece de más de medio cuerpo, y asímismo está estrechamente vinculado con el que grabó Juan de Courbes en la edición de 1630 del Laurel de Apolo, aunque también tiene cierto parecido con el que se conserva en el Museo del Ermitage de San Petersburgo, que ha sido atribuido a Luis Tristán sin argumentos concluyentes según algunos autores. La calidad mediocre de esta obra, que es «un tanto seca» a juicio de algunos historiadores, hacen dudar de que hubiera sido ejecutada por un destacado maestro, por lo que posiblemente sólo sea una de las multiples copias del retrato del dramaturgo «que se veían», ya en su tiempo, en casa de los hombres «curiosos» o de gusto.
