A view of the totally ruined Chakan Fort in the suburb of Chakan, in the western Indian city of Pune (Poona). This is considered to be one of the very few forts of the king Shivaji which is located at ground level. We went to Chakan looking for the site of the upcoming Pune (Poona) International Airport. Slated to be the largest airport in India, the proposal has been hanging fire since 2004 due to red tape, difficulties in obtaining clearances, objections from the Air Force (Pune/ Poona is a major air force base) and last by not least bickering by local politicians out for their pound of flesh who keep instigating the local farmers to protest against 'inadequate compensation' and to not let the project go forward. Indeed, much of India's progress is hampered by self serving politicians. In the end, we never managed to see the airport site as it was still a good 7 - 8km away, it was still caught in politicians' mischief, and no one could really tell us where exactly the site lay.(Pune/ Poona, June 2011)
