The data was extracted from the ghel database using MBR matching. Alaska and Hawaii were excluded at this point for time purposes. A custom python script was used to match the points to the correct or nearest state. The results were then added to a public domain shape of the US using fGIS, which was processed into the cartogram using ScapeToad. Plans to color states according to typical assessment ratings were abandoned due worries of misrepresentation.
For reference, the area in New Mexico (the imploded square left of Texas) is 1,162 articles. An error is visible due to constrains with DC (should be similar sized to New Mexico), Delaware and Massachusetts all of which are undersized.
