Português: Em Portugal no começo do século XIX, a farolagem da costa era muito deficiente, levando os estrangeiros a designá-la por "Costa Negra" e a afastarem-se dela. Como a navegação comercial apenas frequentava os portos de Lisboa e Porto, os naufrágios nas barras do Tejo e Douro eram frequentes.
Por ordem do rei D. Miguel foi criada em 1838 em São João da Foz do Douro, a Real Casa de Asilo dos Náufragos, destinada a casa abrigo para salva-vidas. Em fevereiro de 1892 um violento temporal assolou a costa portuguesa, tirando a vida a 105 dos cerca de 900 pescadores que estavam em faina. Perante tal tragédia, e por insistência de S. Majestade a Rainha D. Amélia, foi criado por Carta de Lei de 21 de Abril de 1892, o Real Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos, mantendo-se como presidente a sua fundadora Sua Majestade a Rainha Dona Amélia, até à implantação da República em 5 de Outubro de 1910, passando a designar-se por Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos (ISN). |
