Notes
The Yellow Crane Tower stands on Snake Mountain, overlooking the Yangzi River, at the city of Wuchang in Hubei Province. The original tower was built for the king of Wu in 223 AD during the Three Kingdoms period. It was intended to serve as a military lookout tower for the protection of the town below. By the eighth century during the Tang dynasty, it had become a popular venue for literary gatherings of the aristocracy and educated elite.
