Aix fut entourée d’une enceinte sans doute dès sa création. Les murailles romaines restaient encore présentes au 18e siècle dans le Palais comtal. Les remparts protégeant la ville étaient repoussés régulièrement pour englober les agrandissements.
La Tourreluque, du provençal luca, regarder, guetter, est un des rares vestiges de ces murs et de loin le plus impressionnant. Elle date du 14e siècle, quand la guerre de Cent ans, menée loin au nord, jetait sur les routes d’une Provence préservée, des bandes de soldats démobilisés devenus pillards.
De plan polygonal, avec ses créneaux sur mâchicoulis-arcades, elle est typique de l’architecture militaire d’alors, très semblable à celle d’Avignon.

Les remparts ne furent détruits qu’au milieu du 19e siècle et laissèrent la place au boulevard périphérique.
