Summary
Description1965 The burnt out wreckage of TEAL Lockheed Electra ZK-TEC at Whenuapai, Auckland.jpg
English: Lockheed L-188 Electra ZK-TEC belonging to Tasman Empire Airways Ltd., TEAL, predecessor to Air NZ. In this photo the wreckage has been moved off the runway.
On Saturday, 27 March 1965 a TEAL Electra named "Akaroa" crashed at Whenuapai during a training flight. It is believed that control was lost between the last segment and flare due to a wrong approach configuration and it landed heavily following a flight idle approach to Whenuapai. One of the main gear legs failed and the aircraft caught fire. All six on board survived.
