Summary
Description1800-1850 photograph of Chidambaram Nataraja temple, 1000 pillar mandapam.jpg
English: The Raja Sabha or 1000 pillar madapam choultry in northeast corner of the third prakara, past the Shivaganga pool. The photo suggests that there were a row of figurative sculptures as kutis. This does not exist anymore, probably taken out and sold to art collectors during late 19th century restorations.
This photo was taken in the first half of 19th century, but neither exact year is known nor the author. The photo was published in 1850s and its negative held by the Museum of Contemporary Art, housed within the Government College of Arts and Crafts. The subjects of these photographs range from the hill tribes of Nilgiris to pagodas and monuments of the Madras Presidency to guns and antiques from Fort St. George.
