The Wacław Felczak Institute for Polish-Hungarian Cooperation is a Polish institute devoted to Polish-Hungarian cooperation, established by the Act of 8 February 2018[1]. The Institute's patron is Professor Waclaw Felczak, historian, expert on Central Europe, expert on Polish-Hungarian relations, and Carpathian courier during World War II.
Description
Pursuant to the Act, the Institute is a state legal entity. The bodies of the Institute are: The Board of Institute and the Director. The Board of Institute consists of members appointed from among individuals distinguished by their knowledge of Polish-Hungarian relations and from specialists whose knowledge, experience or authority guarantee the correct performance of the Institute's objectives.
The Prime Minister of Poland, with the decision of 1 August 2018, appointed Professor Maciej Szymanowski, PhD as the Director of the Institute.
The Institute's aims include:
- passing on the importance of the Polish-Hungarian tradition to the younger generations;
- strengthening cooperation and networking between representatives of the younger generation, particularly in the fields of culture and sport;
- encouraging scientific cooperation, initiatives and scientific and educational projects aimed at mutual knowledge of the language, culture, history and politics of both countries;
- supporting mutual innovative thinking between Polish-Hungarian cultural, economic and political organisations in order to strengthen the competitiveness of both countries;
- financing or co-financing of projects for Polish-Hungarian cooperation;
- analysing political, economic and social changes in Europe affecting the security and development of the Republic of Poland and Hungary.
The institute sponsors research and journalistic activities, runs a scholarship and translation programme and a school programme for teaching Hungarian language in Poland and Polish in Hungary.
In Krasiczyn near Przemyśl the Institute is organising a Polish-Hungarian Summer University - School of Leaders.[2], and a Visegrad Summer Academy in Budapest[3] at the National University of Public Service. The Institute also runs the trilingual news portal kurier.plus, as well as publishing programme. Since 2022, the Institute has been organising the high-school competition ‘Poland-Hungary - A History of Friendship’.[4]
In Hungary, a partner foundation, the Wacław Felczak Foundation, was established in 2018 by the Hungarian government. The aim of the foundation, as with the Institute, is to expand Polish-Hungarian cooperation[5].
