The shared universe, much like the source material originating in the comic books, was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters. The films are in various stages of development and production with the first installment, Bloodshot, released on March 13, 2020.

Development

Bloodshot

Intended to launch a new shared cinematic universe of Valiant Comics superheroes, Bloodshot was originally planned to be followed by four movies: a sequel, two films based on the comic book series Harbinger, and a culmination in a crossover titled Harbinger Wars.[1]

Amid the reopening of movie theaters worldwide, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Bloodshot was given as second theatrical run.[2][3] In November of the same year, Diesel officially signed onto the project to reprise his role as Raymond "Ray" Garrison / Bloodshot.[4]

Harbinger

In March 2008, it was announced that a film centered around the Harbringers was in development. Brett Ratner was hired as director, while Alexandra Milchan, Jay Stern, Dinesh Shamdasani and Jason Kothari signed onto the project as producers.[5] By February 2013, Stephen Susco and Ratner were working on a new draft of the script.[6] In April 2015, Valiant Entertainment, Sony Pictures and Neal H. Moritz's Original Film announced a five-picture deal to bring the publisher's heroes to the big screen, which included a film titled Harbinger, with a script written by Eric Heisserer. The film was announced to be in development consecutively with a sequel and crossover film titled Harbinger Wars, featuring Raymond "Ray" Garrison / Bloodshot.[7] Initially scheduled to be the initial installment in the franchise, development on Harbinger was delayed in favor of releasing Bloodshot as the first film.[8][1]

By November 2018, it was reported that Justin Tipping will direct the film, with a script co-written by Heisserer, Tipping and Joshua Beirne-Golden. The plot will revolve around Peter Stanchek / Sting, a young man who discovers he has supernatural abilities, who joins forces with other superpowered individuals in order to thwart the nefarious plans of a villainous organization that seeks to weaponize the titular heroes' powers. The film will feature additional characters from the comic book series including Joe Irons, Kris Hathaway, Faith Herbert / Zephyr, and Charlene Dupre / Flamingo. In September 2019, it was announced that Harbinger would be distributed by Paramount Pictures.[9][10]

In February 2022, Wes Ball was hired as director following Tipping's departure from the project. Andrew Lanham joined the production to do a re-write of the script. Ball, Joe Hartwick Jr., Moritz, Toby Jaffe, Dan Mintz, and Dinesh Shamdasani will serve as producers.[7][11] The project will be a joint-venture production between Paramount Pictures, Oddball Entertainment, Original Film, and Valiant Entertainment.[11] Later that year in June, Ball stepped down from his role so that he could focus on his role as director of a Planet of the Apes trilogy. Paul Downs Colaizzo entered early negotiations to serve as director, as well as to rewrite the previous draft of the script.[12] By February 2023, the filmmaker was confirmed to be officially serving as director.[13]

Faith

In June 2018, Sony Pictures announced a film centered around the superhero Faith Herbert / Zephyr is in development, with Maria Melnik hired to pen the script. The film will be produced by Neal H. Moritz and Dan Mintz.[14][15]

In February 2023, the project was moved to Paramount alongside the rest of the Valiant Cinematic Universe slate. The screenplay will be written by Emily Carmichael, while Neal H. Moritz, Toby Jaffe, and Dan Mintz will serve as producers. The project will be a joint-venture production between Original Film and Valiant Entertainment.[13]

X-O Manowar

In September 2016, newly formed Valiant Entertainment announced a feature film centered around Aric of Dacia / X-O Manowar. Executives of the company stated that there were notable directors attached to the project, and that the film will be true to the source material.[16] By April of 2020, John Cena teased his involvement with the film via his social media platforms.[17][18]

Eternal Warrior

In August 2017, it was reported that a film centered around Gilad Anni-Padda / Eternal Warrior, and staring Dave Bautista, was in development.[19] The actor confirmed his involvement that same month, while stating that the script is ongoing rewrites, to get it to be "fan worthy".[20] It was also confirmed to be set in the same continuity of Archer & Armstrong.[21]

Archer & Armstrong

In March 2017, a feature film centered around the superhero duo Obadiah Archer and Aram Anni-Pada / Armstrong was announced to be in development. The project, which is said to be a buddy action comedy in tone, will be a joint-venture production between Valiant Entertainment and Sean Daniel Company. BenDavid Grabinski will serve as screenwriter, while Dinesh Shamdasani, Sean Daniel and Jason Brown are attached as producers.[22][23] In March 2017, Ruben Fleischer signed onto the project as director, with Terry Rossio re-writing the script.[24]

Shadowman

In October 2012, a film centered around Jack Boniface / Shadowman was announced to be in development. The project was announced with a script written by J. Michael Straczynski, with Jason Kothari, Dinesh Shamdasani, Sean Daniel and Jason Brown signed on as producers.[25] By June of 2017, the film re-entered development when Reginald Hudlin signed on as director. Hudlin and Adam Simon serve as screenwriters, with a rewrite the previous draft of the script. Straczynski remains attached to the project as an executive producer. The project is being developed in-house before being shopped around to film studios. Notably, a film centered around the character was first pitched to Acclaim Entertainment by Ice Cube in 1997.[26]

Untitled Bloodshot sequel

Following the release of Bloodshot, and the impact of the coronavirus on the movie industry due COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the future of the franchise was questioned by various outlets.[27][28] The movie ended it's theatrical run, after only 90-days.[29] Despite this, the film was released digitally through Premium VOD in the United States and Canada on March 24, 2020.[30] Over its first three days of home release, Bloodshot was the most watched on Amazon Prime and fourth-most on iTunes.[31] Despite the pandemic's affects on the film's box office returns, it was ranked number one on Digital Entertainment Group's "Watched at Home Top 20" list for the week ending May 9, 2020.[32]

In March 2020, director David S. F. Wilson stated that even though different film studios have distribution rights, Valiant still plans to build a franchise from Bloodshot, while acknowledging that Diesel will play a large role in the future of the planned film series.[33] In November 2020, a Bloodshot sequel was officially announced as being in development, with Diesel intended to reprise his role.[4][34] By December of the same year, Diesel confirmed his involvement with the project.[35]

Television

Quantum and Woody

In March of 2017, a television series centered around the superhero duo Eric Henderson / Quantum and Woodrow Henderson / Woody was announced to be in development. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo will serve as showrunners, as well as executive producers alongside Mike LaRocca and Dinesh Shamdasani. Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari will serve as writers on the series, starting with the pilot episode. The series will be a joint-venture production between AGBO Productions and Valiant Entertainment.[36]
