Underground Society (Mandarin: 地下社會,Also known as Underworld) founded in August 1996, is one of Taipei City's longest-running livehouses, and is headed by Chen Shu-Ching (陳淑楨) and Ho Tung-Hung (何東洪), who are the speakers and founding shareholders.

Introduction

Underground Society, located at Shida Road, Daan District, Taipei City, was founded in August 1996 as one of Taipei City's long-established livehouses. The name of the venue is registered as "Hot and Cold Drinks, Juice, Coffee, Tobacco and Liquor" with the Taipei City Commercial Affairs Office, and the directors, Chen Shu-Ching and Ho Tung-Hung, are the spokespersons and founding shareholders. Bands such as 1976, Quarterback, Sticky Rice, Ladybug, Won Fu, The White Eyes, Cosmos People, Children Sucker, 831, etc. have performed here, with a capacity of about 80-100 people.[1]

Live house legalization campaign

After the fire at Jack Daniel's nightclub in Taichung in 2011 (also known as the "ALA Fire" because of the nightclub's alias "ALA"), the county and municipal governments in Taiwan have conducted strict audits of the fire prevention specifications of dance halls, nightclubs, and arts and cultural performance spaces.[2] At the same time, Taipei City's Witch House, Underground Society, and The Wall were subjected to inspections by the city's Development Bureau.[3] Due to the ambiguous positioning of the law, Live House frequently received fines, and the local society negotiated through the legislature to amend the Cultural and Creative Development Law so that Live House could be subjected to the "Rules for Controlling the Use of Land in Zoning Districts," and the "Urban Planning Law," but it was still penalized for operating. However, due to disputes over business registration, building registration, and fire regulations, the underground society turned off the lights on July 15, 2012, ending its 15 years of operation.[4][5]

This has attracted a large number of supportive musicians such as Mayday members Masa and Monster, 1976, Kou Chou Ching, Xiao Ying, etc.[6] After the meeting, Masa was interviewed and said, "As long as there is a way to survive, there is a way to go. In an interview after the meeting, Masha said, "As long as there is a way to survive, don't let those who want to run a business be left in the dark.[7][8][9]

Reopening

On August 11th, 2012, one of the founders of Underground Society, Ho Tung-Hung, released a statement on the Facebook group and official blog, explaining the motivation for the resumption of the business, as well as the process and future plans and details of the live house's campaign for a proper name.[9][10]

With the support of many musicians and cultural figures, on August 15, 2012, Underground Society's signboard was hung in front of the entrance and business resumed. On the day of the resumption of business, the Cultural Affairs Bureau immediately assisted in the inspection, and was subsequently audited by different units of the Taipei City Government, receiving two fines of 60,000 each for "violation of public safety" and "violation of building use" on October 4th and 11th, respectively.[11]

Closing Again

On June 15, 2013, Underground Society closed its doors again. The blog on the official website reads, "Underground Society's lease is about to expire, June 15, 2013 will be our last night. Regrettably, the government has not done anything about the Live House law, and the Normal University Sanli Self-help Association is still exerting pressure on us from all sides, treating us as a source of social chaos. Let's cherish all the memories we created together, thank you![12]
