Draft:The Urban Philanthropic Fund

The Urban Philanthropic Fund (also known as the UPFund) is a Yale University student preprofessional group that also serves as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.[1] The Urban Philanthropic Fund is a student-run, supported public service and social action organization.

Mission

"The UPFund," which was founded in 2016, has a unique mission to promote collaboration between investment and community service, setting it apart from other student organizations at Yale University. Their primary goal is to help students develop the skills required for careers in finance and investment management, enabling them to effectively support nonprofit organizations in New Haven. Additionally, the organization aims to inspire a future generation of finance professionals to actively engage with their communities throughout their lives.

To achieve these objectives, The Urban Philanthropic Fund is organized into three distinct teams: the Investment Team, the Nonprofit Consulting Team, and the Development Team. Each team is led by one or two students who take on the responsibility of heading its operations. These Team Heads are supported by the club President(s), who work collaboratively across all teams to foster a culture of collaboration and drive initiatives such as capital raises and recruitment efforts.

By dividing their work into specialized teams, The UPFund is able to effectively allocate resources and expertise to different aspects of their mission. The Investment Team focuses on investment strategies and managing financial portfolios to generate funds that can be utilized to support nonprofits. The Nonprofit Consulting Team, on the other hand, provides valuable consulting services to nonprofit organizations, helping them optimize their operations and impact. Lastly, the Development Team plays a crucial role in ensuring the sustainability of The UPFund's initiatives.

Through these teams and their coordinated efforts, The Urban Philanthropic Fund maximizes its impact by promoting collaboration among students, leveraging their finance and investment management skills, and empowering effective nonprofits in New Haven. This approach not only benefits the community but also serves as an inspiration for future finance professionals to actively contribute to their communities throughout their careers.[2]

Founding

The Urban Philanthropic Fund was established in 2016 by Ryan Taggarse ’19 with the aim of promoting the intersection between finance and community service. In order to ensure the Fund's work addresses a new need in the Elm City and remains sustainable for years to come, it went through a multistep process to join Yale's Dwight Hall group.[3]

First, the UP Fund submitted an application which was reviewed by Dwight Hall’s Student Executive Committee. After the initial review, the Fund underwent an interview conducted by the Dwight Hall New Membership Coordinator. The final decision on whether the Fund should become a provisional member group was made by the Dwight Hall Student Executive Committee through a voting process. Provisional member groups are granted access to various resources, including funding, publicity, and transportation (such as cars and buses), similar to full member groups.[4]

Following two full semesters as a provisional member group, the fate of the Urban Philanthropic's membership status was determined by the Dwight Hall Student Cabinet. This cabinet consisted of representatives from each Dwight Hall member group, who collectively decided to approve the group as a full member.[5] When the Urban Philanthropic Fund was granted full membership status on February 11, 2021, it gained complete access to Dwight Hall resources and become eligible to vote in future cabinet meetings, thereby gaining a greater influence in decision-making processes.

Governance

The Urban Philanthropic Fund's governance board is composed of distinct positions:

  • Alumni Board
  • President(s)
  • Head(s) of Investment
  • Head(s) of Nonprofit Consulting
  • Head(s) of Development
  • Treasurer

Every year, the members of the Urban Philanthropic Fund democratically vote on new leadership. When the new leadership has been elected, the previous leadership team provides support until the transition is complete.
