Built in 1885, the station was provisionally constructed in the São José neighborhood.[2] The current building was opened in 1888 and is located on Rua Floriano Peixoto, the building was designed by the Minas Gerais architect Herculano Ramos for the Estrada de Ferro Recife-Caruaru.[3]

Central do Recife Station has housed, since 1972, a museum dedicated to the railway memory of the state of Pernambuco. From 2011 onward, the space began to be managed by the Government of Pernambuco, through the Pernambuco Historical and Artistic Heritage Foundation.[4]
