No Cigar, stylised as NO CIGAR, is a five-piece alternative rock group[4][5] from Auckland, New Zealand (Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa). The band was formed in 2019 and includes members Willy Ferrier (vocals, guitar), Josh Morrice (guitar, backing vocals), Arthur Gillies[6] (guitar, backing vocals), Sam Benson (bass guitar, keys) and Ned Gow (drums).[7][8]

The band has released one studio album and one EP.[5] Their first album Bienvinedo reaching No. 2 on the NZ Albums chart.[9] Their second album "The Great Escape" is due to be released on 24 November 2023.[5][10]

History

Established in 2019, No Cigar emerged from the collaborative efforts of a group of long-time friends embarking on a fresh musical project.[7] The band's name is a nod to New Zealand's evident 'tall poppy syndrome', with the group deliberately choosing something 'a little self-deprecating'.[7] The start of their musical journey was marked by the release of their debut single, "Tickets To Space" in late 2019.[11]

In 2020, the band released their first EP, Radical Road, featuring tracks "1999", "Plaster", and "Liquid Dynamite".[12][13]

No Cigar released their debut album, Bienvenido, in September 2022.[5][14] The album means 'welcome' in Spanish,[5][15] and was named in the hope it would serve as a beckoning call and an invitation to the band's ritual.[16] The album comprises eleven songs and featured works; "Suck It Up", "Black Hole", "Some Nights" and "Say No More".[17] The band toured the album in New Zealand and Australia in 2022 and 2023[18] and also played at festivals Rhythm & Vines, That Weekend, and Longline Classic.[16][18]

In September 2023 No Cigar were nominated for "Best New Artist" at the 2023 Panhead Rolling Stone Aotearoa Awards.[19]

Expanding their reach beyond New Zealand, the group ventured on tour across the United Kingdom and Europe. [20]. The tour has preceded the release of their second album, The Great Escape, in November.[5][21] "Make It Better", the first single from the album, debuted at number 11 on the NZ Hot 40 Singles Chart.[5]
