Comment: Municipal councillors in small towns are not automatically entitled to have Wikipedia articles just because they exist. Municipal councillors have to pass WP:NPOL #2, where the test hinges on showing a depth and range and volume of reliable source coverage and analysis about their career in media, marking them out as a special case of much more national significance than most other municipal councillors, but that's not what this is showing: it's referenced almost entirely to primary sources that are not support for notability, and the only media hit is his candidate questionnaire in the local weekly newspaper, which is not nearly enough to get him over NPOL #2. Mike Hanly is a Canadian politician from Devon, Alberta. He was elected as a Councillor for Devon, Alberta in a Municipal By-Election to replace outgoing Councillor Chris Belke.[1]
Mike has served in his community as a Fire Fighter, on committee's, boards, and on the local Legion. He regularly supports and donates to community organizations and charities.[2]
Politics
Mike Hanly started his political journey running in the 2021 Devon Municipal Election, where he ran on needing to achieve a critical mass making it more attractive for both residents and visitors to spend their hard earned dollars in Devon. He spoke about the need to balance and stabilize property taxes, invigorate and refresh, downtown and industrial areas. The need to continue to grow as a friendly, welcoming and inclusive community balancing safety and prosperity, without undue government interference and control.[3] He was defeated in 2021, coming in 8th place with 630 Votes out of 2 208.[4]
Even after the 2021 Election loss, Hanly remained persistent to represent the people of Devon, Alberta and the needs for fiscal responsibility. In 2023 when Chris Belke resigned, he put forward his nomination to replace the outgoing Councillor. He ran on the same fiscal policies he did in 2021, urging that Council continue its strides ensuring fiscal responsibility, while still being aware of the budget.[5] He won the By-Election with 239 Votes out of 540. He was sworn in on February 14, 2023.
In Summer of 2023 Hanly put his name forward for the newly created Otipemisiwak Métis Government, for Citizens Representative. He ran on advocating and fighting for Métis rights, education, healthcare, housing, and justice. Hanly came in second place behind Lisa Wolfe.[6]
