John Harold Kempen is an American ophthalmologist and epidemiologist and a Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School[1] and an Adjunct Professor at the Addis Ababa University and the Myunsung Medical College (MMC), also in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Dr. Kempen is the Director of Global Surgery and Health at Massachusetts Eye and Ear,[2] in Boston Massachusetts. He is also the President and a Board Member of Sight for Souls (a US 501(c)(3) Corporation).[3]
Education
Dr. Kempen graduated in 1988 with a bachelor in Biological Sciences from Stanford University. In 1992 he completed a Doctor of Medicine at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. He completed his MPH in International Health in 1992 and his MHS in Biostatistics in 1999, both from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In 2001 Dr. Kempen received his PhD in Epidemiology from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.[4]
Career
Dr. Kempen is dually trained as a clinical ophthalmologist subspecializing in ocular inflammatory and infectious diseases (often called "uveitis" in aggregate) and as a PhD-trained investigator in clinical epidemiology, with a focus on clinical trials. He has pursued a clinician-investigator's career at Johns Hopkins University for seven years, at the University of Pennsylvania for 11.5 years, and at Massachusetts Eye and Ear since 2017. He became an affiliate of the Harvard School of Medicine Global Health and Social Medicine in 2021.[5]
In 2014 Dr. Kempen and his colleagues founded the eye care development charity Sight for Souls and he relocated to Ethiopia to establish a self-sustaining eye institute in partnership with the Myunsung Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (MCM). [6] Dr. Kempen is focused on research program development in the area of ocular inflammatory diseases and has nearly 100 publications in the field of ophthalmology.[7],[8]
Currently Dr. Kempen is on the editorial board of the American Journal of Ophthalmology,[9] and on the editorial board of the journal Ocular Immunology and Inflammation.[10]
