Generation Loss: The Social Experiments is a television mini-series created by, and starring, content creator Ranboo and aired live on Twitch (service) in May 2023. The season consisted of three episodes: The Spirit of The Cabin, The Mastermind of The Warehouse and The Choice with a variety of special guests appearing across the episodes.[1].

Episode 1: The Spirit of The Cabin[2]

The first episode introduces viewers to a few repeating characters, Ranboo (the Hero) and the Hetch (the Villian). The episode takes place on a cabin that is inhabited by a "spirit" and also introduces viewers to the idea of live interaction with the stream that was available during the live airing via a Twitch extension[3].

Episode 2: The Mastermind of The Warehouse[4]

The episode explores the space in which the Hero, Ranboo, has been held captive by the mysterious Hetch. Through a series of themed rooms the Hero attempts to understand their surroundings and make an escape. The second episode had numerous guest appearances primarily centered around a scene that contained a large carousel and the guests taking turns stating their case for being brought to the next scene of the show.

Episode 3: The Choice[5]

The Hero, Ranboo, free of the controlling force that dominated their decisions in episodes 1 and 2 is led through an abandoned mall that has been revealed as the true set for all episodes and operational base of the fictional Showfall Media. At the finale of the episode the viewers must decide the fate of the Hero whether they will live forever as a character in the programs of Showfall Media or die and be free of the future of repetitive content creation[6].

Viewer interactions were available in all episodes and directly modified the events unfolding in the live show and viewers who watched the live show could interact using a Twitch extension[3]. The extension was developed by Ghost Commander who also provided the content for Squiggles, a character who would appear periodically and assist viewers with tips and information, as well as playing the Hetch.

On May 3, 2023 a mysterious announcement appeared on the show's official Youtube channel featuring an announcement from "Showfall Media" the fictional company behind the series[7]. A billboard promoting the show was displayed in Times Square shortly before the premiere of the show[8]

Reception and Incidents

Following the first episode on May 24, 2023, Ranboo was hospitalized from burns after a malfunction in a prop that left second degree burns on their back[9]. According to the star "something slightly unplugged and left an exposed wire on my back" but there were no delays to the remaining production schedule[10].

Following the release of the show numerous fan theories appeared online speculating about the true meaning behind different scenes in the show. One of the most popular fan theories was created by The Game Theorists and collected over 1.2 Million views in the first 90 days following release[11].

According to the official IMDb records there were over 100 cast and crew involved in the creation of the three episode series[1]. In the first six months following release, the official VODs of the episodes have collected over 5.5 million views[2][5][4].

Jerma985 appeared in the second episode of season 1 serving as both a key character in the episode as well as a creative consultant. A model of the The Jerma985 Dollhouse appeared in episode 1 and according to Ranboo was a source of inspiration for the series[12]

Future

At VidCon in June 2023 Ranboo announced that another series in the Generation Loss universe is under development under the title Generation Zero: The Story of Lostfield[13] but there is no known release date.
