GWR no. 45 was constructed in 1880, and carried the number of a Sharp, Stewart and Company locomotive withdrawn several years beforehand. An unusual feature of no. 45 is that her cab could only be accessed from the right-hand side, and it appears that this was never changed. In common with other Great Western 0-4-0ST locomotives, [1] firebox was placed behind the rear driving wheels, with a consequence being the long rear overhang and a relatively high axle load on the rear axle, which meant that no. 45 was not allowed onto uncoloured lines. After a long life of 58 years, no. 45 was finally withdrawn in 1938, and scrapped, having only run 430,000 miles whilst in operation. No. 45 is also of note, being the only conventional 0-4-0ST built by the Great Western Railway at one of their workshops.
