The ALn 663 (Automotrice Leggera a nafta, Light Diesel motor car) series is a family of diesel railcars built by Fiat Ferroviaria between 1983 and 1995 as successors to the ALn 668 group and still in service given their low operating costs and high level of comfort and reliability.[1]

Background

ALn 663 in original livery.

In 1983 FIAT Ferroviaria Savigliano decided to build a railcar from the base of the ALn 668, but with a more modern layout. The new railcar was designed with 63 seats of which 12 were first class and 51 were second class.

Mechanically, ALn 663s are identical to the ALn 668 1200-3000-3100 series and can reach a maximum speed of 130 km/h (81 mph). They are characterized by a more angular shape of the front end, the fitting of new headlights with four recessed headlights, two with white light and two with red light, replacing the round ones of the ALn 668 group, in which red glass had to be placed over those that were tail lights at that time. The shunting bench was redesigned to integrate the controls related to the third coupled unit, while the interiors were completely renovated by adopting the furnishings of the "MDVC" coaches, but keeping the distance between seats unchanged for structural reasons.

Configuration

ALn 663 in XMPR livery at Labico station.

The ALn 663 is an endothermic diesel-powered railcar.

Each rolling stock is equipped with two supercharged diesel engines, type 8217.32, six-cylinder, rated at 170 kW and arranged under the floor transmitting motion one for each bogie. The transmission is of the classic type with a clutch, five-speed mechanical gearbox and reduction bridge.

The two series differ in transmission ratio: the 1000 series (ALn 663.1001-1016) has a short ratio for use on mountain routes, with a maximum speed of 120 km/h, while the 1100 series (ALn 663.1101-1204) allows a maximum speed of 130 km/h.

Each railcar has two second-class and one first-class compartments.

The interior rooms were air-conditioned in a revamp operation through the installation of Thermo-King (manufactured by Ingersoll-Rand), Carrier, and Konvekta air conditioners.[2]
