Starting this staging, the World Championship will be expanded to include 32 teams, increasing from 24 teams.[1] The tournament will thus also be held biannually instead of quadrennially.[2]
Host selection
Around 31 countries expressed interest to host the tournament.[3] This figure was reduced to a three final candidates; Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines.[4]
On 20 March 2024, FIVB announced that the Philippines will host the tournament.[6][7]
Qualification
The qualification stage of the competition consists of four categories. The host(s) will secure the first place(s). The current world champions Italy also automatically qualifies. The top three teams from each of the latest Continental Championships also qualifies. The final slots will be allocated to the top teams who had not yet qualified as per FIVB World Ranking at the end of the national team season in the year prior to the World Championship.[8]
aFrance, although having placed 4th in the 2023 European Championship, has qualified, as Italy, who placed 2nd in the Championship, is the defending champion of the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship, so they automatically qualify. This left an extra spot for a European team, which went to the next eligible team.
Format
Pool phase
In the pool phase, the 32 teams will spread across eight pools of four teams playing in a round-robin system. The top two teams from each pool then advance to the direct elimination phase.
Direct elimination phase
In the direct elimination phase, the 16 teams will be matched-up into knock-out stage: the winners will advance to the next stage, and the losers will be eliminated from the competition.
Pools composition
The draw of lots is scheduled to take place on 24 September 2024 in a yet to be announced venue in Metro Manila.[9]
